I am sometimes asked how I got into doing Aromatherapy and Massage. In Cambridge which has a population of about 100,000 there are several practitioners at the clinic where I work alone.
I discovered many years ago that it worked for me personally and at that time was working at the now closed Northgate Clinic, a therapeutic community treating adolescents with mental health problems, many of them with complex PTSD resulting from abuse.
The unit supported me in training in Aromatherapy and Massage which I used with some of the young people there, always with a chaperone present. For many of these young adults, this was a key part of their learning that touch need not be abusive.
While the current climate does in the NHS does not support the use of massage and aromatherapy in adolescent mental health units, I still find being able to help individuals of any age on their healing journey a really fulfilling experience.
Whether this healing is purely physical, purely emotional or as is most often the case a mixture of the two I give my whole attention to my client for the duration of the session, be that 60 or 90 minutes.
Many psychological and physical conditions can be helped by therapeutic touch and essential oils chosen for the individual as a person can greatly enhance the potency of the massage experience.
