The above form is a framework I use rather than a rigid formula to find out what your main issues are. Some clients are naturally good historians and give all or nearly all the information under reasons for seeking aromatherapy. Others will only give me a piece of information if I ask for it and sometimes not even then! As long as this isn’t a piece of information that would contraindicate massage or a particular essential oil this is not a problem.
Many of my longer term clients reveal more and more as the number of sessions increases. An example is, sometimes a client doesn’t tell me about operations and when I see them there is an obvious scar. The age of the scar tells me whether or not I need to be careful around the area or not. Coming from a nursing background I can nearly always tell what the medical reason for the scar was. but will usually check with the client to confirm.
I like to get a picture of the client as a whole person so I can choose oils to help them psychologically ans spiritually as well as physically. That is not to say I am judging them but rather we work together to achieve the client’s goals. If they say that they are not interested in any of that, “fluffy psychological stuff” so be it I will choose oils purely based on their goals. I don’t try and treat a psychological issue such as a, “need to slow down and meditate” that I perceive by say adding Frankincense to a blend where otherwise I wouldn’t. If that oils is indicated for the physical issues then I will still use it.
Sometimes clients who come initially only for physical reasons recognise their psychological needs only after two or more sessions but it is not my place to dictate this!
