When most think of Trauma, they are perhaps thinking of physical damage to the body. For myself after over 25 years when I worked in child and adolescent mental health, I am much more likely to think of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD. This is something I see from time to time in my practice and based on my experience working at a therapeutic community would say that many more could benefit from Aromatherapy and Massage for this condition.

Some of those who could benefit would come into the category of those who self harm while others may experience panic attacks and other symptoms of anxiety.

Oils that I would use for this group include Bergamot and other citrus oils, Frankincense and Vetiver.

A large part of the treatment aim for this group is for the incident that triggered the PTSD to become a much less important part of their life, even if it involves the loss of a loved one. Then the aim would be for the loved one’s life however long or short to be the important thing rather than their death.

The fact that I have seen massage and aromatherapy make a real difference gives me the confidence to work with this group even though some of my colleagues might shy away from it.
