Exercise, Massage and Depression

Yesterday two very dear friends stopped in to visit on their way home and in the course of conversation a friend of theirs was mentioned who had serious problems with depression and had taken to exercise to deal with it. He had taken the exercise bit to what many would call an extreme, regularly doing Iron Man triathalons. – 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle ride and 26 mile run.

An extreme it may be but he hasn’t had a breakdown since he started this regime and is now doing talks at conferences on the subject.

Even if everyone with depression had the motivation to do this, it is unlikely that it would work so well with all. However a very high percentage of people with depression are helped by exercise.

Massage can also help with depression, especially when combined with essential oils. One thing the two have in common is that both massage and exercise result in the production of endorphins by the body.
